Hola my dear friend,
The Cancer moon came a went earlier this week while I was acclimating to my new course material and a big week of Thirderly (trimester) planning with Megan Hale clients. So we are here with a Virgo New Moon missive instead. August has definitely been full.
In 1993 I was a teaching assistant for the Astronomy Lab at Santa Rosa Junior College where I was training students to learn astral photography (when I learned how valuable Flow states are for enjoying tedious things).
Comet Shomaker-Levy-9 had been discovered and was predicted to impact Jupiter. By the summer of 1994 a lucky two dozen students and a handful of former TAs along with our Astronomy instructors were able to witness the inevitable impacts on Jupiter by viewing the impact results through telescopes seconds after the comet fragments pollinated Jupiter.
That time in my life was incredible filled with meaning and connection to the Cosmos. Training students in the skill of focusing on a star to maintain the telescope’s position during the many minutes of open aperture was intense. The anticipation was exciting as the film results of their hard work weren’t seen for days.
Many of my students would kindly have duplicates made and leave them for me with cards of gratitude for the experience. In my short two weeks with them, my desire was to leave them with the paradigm shift of deepening their relationship with the Cosmos and our dear friends in the Solar system.
In that 18 months I was honored to work with hundreds of starbright students eager to be in greater relationship to our Cosmos.
So when this new image appeared of Jupiter, I cried to see a photo that captures how I feel about my Jovian friend.

On Inequality Day
During my time at SRJC I was very torn between which major and direction I would take to finish my B.A. I was limited by custody law from moving out of Sonoma County with my children.
I was studying Astronomy and Physics with an emphasis in Women in Science. The data on success rates of BBIBOC (Black, Brown, Indigenous Bodies of Culture) was abysmal. Very few were in higher degrees, and a scant few could cope in labs for long.
As a single mom of two toddlers and limited capacity to compete in white male-dominated settings, I decided to focus on making a difference in STEM through policy.
Outside of college I was very involved in politics, registering people to vote, supporting women running for office, and as Treasurer and Event Planner, was part of a coalition of rights groups that created a year of celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the Equal Right to Vote.
So, I turned away from majoring in Astrophysics and went to Mills College where I majored in Gender and Women’s Studies.
August 26th commemorates the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment, solidifying the right to vote for SOME women. But now, we have fewer rights than we’ve had in decades! We call on our lawmakers to:
1️⃣ Pass voting rights legislation that protects BBIBOC right to Vote 2️⃣ Add the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution 3️⃣ Restore reproductive health choice to all
