Body hair. Growing up I was keenly aware of those that had it and those that didn’t.
•
My dad didn’t have much being Latino. But he did sport a macho moustache for a time.My mom had a lot —everywhere. It was the 70s, I don’t think she ever owned a razor. Also French Canadian.
•
In a conversation about racism with a friend from Nicaragua I learned something really fascinating that had eluded me about body hair. It’s a sign of status among Latinx. The more you had, the better your status.
•
This blew my mind.
•
We were talking about skin shades and how colonialism created levels of social and hence economic status based on how light you were. The addition of hair quantity enhanced this discussion deeply.
•
If you got it, flaunt it was the idea. It elevated one, providing more opportunity for money and women. Lightening the bloodline was gouache. The more facial hair the more likely that man is European.
•
We talked about the baby test (which baby kids prefer and how they feel about their skin color). I am deeply disturbed by how young an age self-worth and esteem is imprinted by skin color. I have always preferred darker skin tones. There is test that even shows elicit bias of skin tones.
•
As I work on decolonization of self and understanding my own privilege around being light-skinned, I’ve become acutely aware of how much lack, poverty, enoughness, our very self-worth was created in colonialism.

The importance of doing the work for me has also been about how I’ve let my self-worth be dictated by dominant white culture. (Continued in comments)

More than ever I am convinced that people waking up, getting healing, giving back is what is needed. What the world wants is to be healed through people being healed so they can do good work (because people is how we got in this mess). Bring your Light.

For my part I’m checking places where I’ve had blinders. I’m continuing to #dothework around decolonization of self, uncovering more of my own racism as a light-skinned indigenous Latinx, looking at my embodied rage and fierce love of humans, family, how I’ve felt about who I am and what is guiding me. I will write more as I process it.
•
I had originally posted the first paragraph on healing with a Marianne Williamson quote that was created weeks ago. I hired a Panamanian gal to create inspirational quotes for my feed. Mostly lightworkers of all colors. But I’m really questioning some of the WW and their own blinders, as well as the methods I use to help people heal.
•
I removed the MA quote because after learning about some problems with her, I’m definitely not interested in promoting her at the moment.
•
I encourage you to check out my saved story highlight on doing the work as I go through @rachel.cargle’s series and consider doing the challenge and supporting more BIPOC like her.
•
I love this photo because it reminds me of the message I received as a young girl about how no matter the color of our skin, we all reflect rainbows of light if you look closely.
•
There is so much pain in the world being inflicted on BIPOC and Pachamama. I know my calling is to help us all shine our luminous rainbow selves in service to her.
•

This one wont be funny. I will write one right after this that is funny. This is important. Some of you will have no clue what I am talking about and want to know where the funny is. Others will be fascinated by it and or know exactly what I am talking about. If you are one of them, pay attention to that. .
Here it is. .
Caterpillars are interesting. They eat literally 18,000 times their own weight. They are always just walking around leaves, consuming, eating everything they see.
If they had the CHOICE to become a butterfly and didn’t have real evidence that butterflies used to be caterpillars, they might be scared to become one. They would never want to give up all that food they are eating and living in that survival mind set. Especially if the other caterpillars around them constantly said stuff like “Live a little! You can eat whatever you want. It’s normal!” Every time a butterfly said to a caterpillar “You can do this, you can fly and be free like me.” 9000 other caterpillars would call the butterfly crazy, so they could justify themselves staying the same.
It would be scary to try to become a butterfly. You have to become a cocoon, you have to stop consuming, you have to let go, you have to leave your friends, you have to be alone, you have to stop your old habits, you have to trust that it will happen, you have to be patient.

Every once in a while, a caterpillar says, I wonder if the butterfly is right and the other caterpillars are wrong. (Continued in comments)

Having witnessed a recent national uprising with factions and standoffs in my city and studied revolutions, I think it’s important that we revisit some of the values and models that women Changemakers employed throughout history. Ella Baker leaned on a form of participatory democracy that was decentralized leadership. An early Occupy style.
.
As an elected official that participated and supported the listening of the Occupy Movement in my home town, I recently saw a video about a town in Mexico that adopted the style of governance that decentralized leadership.
.
Cheran, Mexico’s women had enough of corruption and removed politicians and police. No campaigning is allowed. An independent security force guards the city. People participate in policy and governance block by block.
.
This kind of model would do well for further exploration in a holonic model where a coalition of representatives meets in larger regions to represent the smaller units. Not single leadership representation. Something much more inclusive and diverse.
