Empire pins the ache on you. Ritual returns it to the lineage where it belongs.
Hola! I’m Ixchel Lunar (they/them), an Indigenous-Time Ecologist, ancestral medicine guide, and rhythm witch for creative rebels, decolonial dreamers, and neuroqueer visionaries. This Substack is dedicated to weaving business, body, and belonging into something no empire can replicate. Still punk as fuck. Still cozy in the chaos.
Weaving the next Dragon 🐉 Letter, taking in Tyson Yunkaporta’s new book (richly narrated by him on audio), Right Story, Wrong Story: How to Have Fearless Conversations in Hell. It’s sooo good!
Beautiful Wildlings,
Sometimes the dead remind us they’re still near. A scent, an object, a memory that arrives unannounced. These are real threads of connection.
But many of the popular methods today treat these threads like inanimate objects.
Family Constellations, Systemic Constellations, Internal Family Systems, each offer ways of surfacing the ancestral. Patterns emerge. Old voices speak. Parts of the psyche that don’t feel personal step forward.
This has value. Insight can land, and emotions can move. Yet my understanding of these methods is that they draw on ancestral work without ritual protection. There are no boundaries between the living and the dead, no container for the troubled ones, no rite to hold what has been opened.
The issue is that participants often leave still carrying the ancestral burdens that are most in need of release. The unwell ancestors have been awakened, drawn close, and left without a way to transform. The troubled dead remain unhealed. 👀
Therapy itself, while often essential, still operates inside an imperial framework that pins the problem on the individual. Jennifer Mullan, in her work on decolonizing therapy, reminds us that this is part of the design: to separate us from the animistic and ancestral realms that were part of human existence for millennia before colonization.
Empire thrives when individuals carry the weight of systemic, generational wounds as if they were personal failings.
I know this tension intimately. I was in therapy for ten years with a master astrologer/psychologist and an I Ching researcher. It was incredibly helpful. It helped me break patterns of abuse and gave me the gift of seeing my story in an archetypal context.
Yet therapy alone left me without ground to soothe my nervous system, without a way to tend the intergenerational inheritances that live in my body, without ritual to hold what I now know is called Pentad Super Syndrome — the hyper-responsibility and survival drive inherited from generations of trauma.
This is the cost of working without ritual. Philosopher Byung-Chul Han calls it the “loss of ritual,” a collapse of mystery into spectacle. Without ritual, therapy and coaching try to fill the void, but meaning doesn’t anchor into a deeper context of the relations of Time. We are left with recognition, but not repair.
In Ancestral Lineage Healing, we begin with some core understandings. Consciousness continues after death. Not all ancestors are well. The dead can change. The living and the dead can communicate with each other. And the influence moves both ways.
These principles provide a ritual foundation where protection is central, and where the unwell ancestors are supported in their recovery so they can offer us blessings instead of burdens.
This is why I insist on ritual protection. Protection is not superstition. It is the ground that keeps ancestral work from becoming harmful while making space for the well ancestors to draw near. Ritual transforms ache into altar.
That is why I’m hosting this free workshop tomorrow: The Ache Is Ancestral: Open the Door Safely. Our focus is on ritual protection, belonging, and ancestral connection.
📅 Thursday, August 28th, 1PM MT / 3PM ET
🎥 Live with limited replay
And if you know you’re ready to live this practice, the Ancestral Wayfinding Practice Circle takes the Ritual Kit into a 4-week arc of guided practice and shared tending. Sliding scale $150–$300. Plus the workshop and Ritual Kit are included. Enrollment opens tomorrow at the end of the workshop.
Curiosity opens the door. Ritual protection keeps you safe when you walk through.
Stay wild, love fiercely. Your presence is golden.

Your Sanctuary to Cultivate Wild Presence for Thriving with a Planet in Transition
I was raised and bore children on the traditional, unceded, and stolen lands of the Coast and Central Valley Miwok (colonized as Petaluma, CA) and Nisenan (colonized as Sacramento and Fair Oaks, CA), past, present, and future. I also write, work, and live in the highland forest of the traditional, unceded and stolen lands of the Totonac, Nahua, and Mexicah, past, present, and future, in what is known as Coatepec, Veracruz, Mexico.
P.P.S. I do not live or consent to the colonial impositions regarding the construct of Time. I also practice honoring rhythms of work, play, and rest so that I can serve you with embodied presence and with loving care. This means I may take several days to respond to your requests and questions. (h/t Eva Glamaris)
