What a November itโs been! I am officially re-immigrated to Mexico. I received my temporary residency card last Friday, my first step in becoming a permanent resident and eventually a citizen.
After being undocumented for over 2 years in Nicaragua, it feels incredible to be โdocumentedโ again. Beyond the stigma and theft of oneโs human birthright to migrate that is placed on those living outside their homeland without State recognition (#beyondborders), there is a dysregulation being relieved from the fear of being caught.
Plus, now I can open a bank account, get booster shots, and see if I can qualify to get a car. Iโm still unsure if I can drive after my spinal injury, but Iโm ready to rent a car and try. Living in the mountains, itโs not easy doing everything by taxi, especially with all my neuro-emergent sensitivities.
Thursday was U.S. Thanksgiving. I reflected on why I stopped participating in family dinners at 14. Growing up in a mixed-race family I distinctly remember how difficult it was to break bread with my step-momโs Portuguese-Italian family.
My abuelita was a deeply genuine person, but there was this grin-and-bear-it fake smile she would wear to these dinners that was unbearable for me. It all came down to how they treated her son, my dad.ย
It didnโt matter that my dad, the youngest real estate broker in California, had become quite successful, even becoming an honorary mayor of our little village twice over. It didnโt matter that he had founded American River Bank and been tapped to run for State Senate. He was still a dirty Mexican in his in-laws eyes.
Even in the 70s and 80s the one-drop rule existed. At four years old I was not permitted to enter my step-momโs Portuguese grandparents home because I was โdirty.โ I was made to sit on the porch. It would be some years before I understood what that meant. But by 14, I could no longer grin-and-bear the white supremacy in my house.
In my custody agreement I even gave up Thanksgiving with my kids so I could have them for x-mas eve, my abuelitaโs birthday gathering. My tradition on that holiday was going to the movies. When the kids grew up and had days off we eventually began having our own deconstructed dinners with stuffed acorn squash and tofurky.
One year my youngest couldnโt make it because they were kettled and arrested for providing medical attention to protesters at a protest against the killing of Oscar Grant (rest in power) in Oakland. #proudparent
I do miss having those holiday gatherings. Living in Mexico, I hope to find new friends and create new traditions of gathering.

Doing Gender
When I was just 18 and pregnant with my second child I decided I was going to have a home birth. My experience birthing my first child at the hospital was a nightmare and significant learning event.
Becoming a parent was an awakening, seeing the world that was hostile to my daughter. So much of that insight was around patriarchal norms and gender constructs that felt like trying to mash my foot into a glass slipper that just didnโt fit me in an attempt to receive privileges that were never meant for me.
The gestation, layette, and birth of my second child was gender-free, mostly. Right after I pulled my child out of my womb and onto my chest, my mother shouted their sex and then apologized for her excited outburst.
Being a parent of a child that did not accept gender norms was such a challenge and a blessing. But I always took on the role of parent as student and children as teachers (while still providing healthy boundaries and rules for safety).
It was challenging because I was never comfortable with the rigidity of my assigned gender. I was the tomboy, tree climber, and first-time female. I was curious about doing gender, wearing the dresses, putting on make-up because of what femininity elicited (a seemingly unspoken, magical power). And I loved that I could create another human with this body.
By my mid-twenties struggling with endometriosis, and undiagnosed PMDD, I was pretty over being female and was quite non-binary. After another decade of decreasing income equality and opportunities, I decided to run for political office. I cringe when I remember my political mentors and backers were pushing me to grow out my hair, wear makeup and not discuss my queerness. Add to that being not white, my Latine mentors were telling me I had to look impeccable in suits or Iโd never be accepted.ย
My superpower growing up had been being a third culture kid. This code-switching was something I was accustomed to.ย
So this weekโs terrorist shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs has brought up all the feelings. My fierce mama as protector came alive. I was amazed to see the police chief share chosen names and pronouns of the deceased.
And, no I donโt buy the shooter being non-binary. But Iโm open to being proven wrong. Iโve just seen how defense attorneys operate with the murder of my BBIBOC father through five years of trials, 2 hung juries and only a second degree murder conviction after the third trial. The white killer was eventually freed on a miranda rights violation after serving only 8 years.
The experience of losing my father to gun violence at 16 shaped my views of banning guns. In 1988 gun violence was rare. But now with over 600 mass shootings in 2022 so far, and a broken system that isnโt built to protect anyone but white men, Iโve shifted my view.
Since living in MesoAmerica where people with large automatic weapons are seen guarding many establishments, Iโve felt safer than ever.ย
The current policy is leaving our kids and the masses vulnerable to terrorism. Yes, terrorsim. Many of these shootings are acts of terrorism, but the media isnโt portraying it this way. I think that has led to boiling frog syndrome in the U.S.
I donโt expect politicians to solve this because many are inciting violence. But businesses can invest in heavily-armed security at schools, colleges, markets and places that people gather like Queer bars. What?! Security guards with AR-15s at my kids school? Yes, I think thatโs the stage youโre at in the U.S.
My Flow mentor Steven Kotler has written about how we get into Flow in difficult and challenging situations. He points to Navy Seals and their training being essential for impeccable response in crisis. I saw this immediately when I learned of Richard Fierro stopping the gunman at Club Q. He โsunk to the level of his trainingโ to disarm the gunman. Itโs time to protect our people with seriously armed and trained people. And it reminds us that being in Flow saves lives.
I’ve been trained in non-violent protest. I don’t own a gun, but I have been trained in how to use one. And I’ve lived under a dictatorship that disarmed its people and then shot them during non-violent protests. So, my both/and take is that we deserve the right to non-violent protest and being protected from gun violence.
