Dragon Letters #17
Capricorn Moon Edition

January 2, 2022

Hola my dear ,

Happy 2022! I’m grateful you’re here. This Capricorn New Moon has me reflecting deeply on what’s worked and not worked this past year.

I led a workshop and the beginning of a collective retreat last week. This morning my devices told me I had reduced my screen time 48% last week. I needed a rest.

What I’ve found is that longer workshops, as fulfilling as they are in giving the longer Zoom teachings on decolonizing Time, are rough on me physically.

So for 2022, I’m focusing on my Wild Presence 1:1 coaching program as well as offering the longer teachings as self-study courses (Decolonizing Time, Rest Revolt and Boundless Vision) that include 12 months of monthly Integration/AMA group coaching calls.

I don’t talk much about my disabilities, in part because dominator culture would have us believe that I should be healing from four different autoimmune disorders, degenerative disk issues and spinal crush fractures. And also because people want to be helpful and give advice, which if you’ve noticed, I’m a walking wiki, so I probably have already tried it.

But, because I’ve got to be gentle with myself, despite wanting to do all the things, I’m going to limit my teaching time to giving interviews, podcasts, and speaking gigs so I can focus on what I love, which is coaching.

If you’ve wanted to Decolonizing Time and incorporate rest, join the Self-Study to disturb your colonial roots as we make way for what comes from the composting of this coloniality. Includes 12 Monthly Integration/AMA Coaching Calls. Payment plan available.

This Dragon Letter below is a return to dismantling our mechanistic view of Time. I’m sharing two books. Two different angles on Being that I’ve enjoyed recently.

As I’ve said before decolonizing Time is about repairing our relationship to Time/Space/Place. In echoing Tuck & Yang, I also want to remind us, that we cannot do decolonizing work if it doesn’t include returning land to the Indigenous stewards of the land.

Holding this as a central issue in our repair work requires edgewalking, living in the in-between — swimming the the waters of yt supremacy culture — while reclaiming and creating our post-hegemonic, post-activist future. Decolonizing Time is about getting us on dry land.

Stay wild, love fiercely. Your presence is golden.

Shine Theory

If you’re not following Jane Charlesworth, the anticapitalist life coach, on Instagram you missed some brilliant posts on capitalism in their advent calendar in December. Their latest newsletter (called the hypha) was a beautiful reflection on Time.

Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals
by Oliver Burkeman

“Productivity is a trap. Becoming more efficient just makes you more rushed, and trying to clear the decks simply makes them fill up again faster… Since finitude defines our lives… living a truly authentic life — becoming fully human — means facing up to that fact.”

I came across this book again (it’s been popping up in my wanderings) through Maria Popova’s website, The Marginalian (thank you Margaret Wheeler for getting me hooked on this website).

I actually avoided it because of the subtitle about the dreaded time management. I really don’t like my work being compared to time management because it re-centers the domination of Time.

But after reading Maria’s review, I discovered this book is also anti-hacking of the body/life/Time.

Burkeman also has a philosopher’s mind and a Buddhist’s heart like myself. Plus he has a wicked sense of English humor.

Do Nothing by Celeste Headlee

This book should be required reading in adulting. Headlee gets at all the ways we are constantly struggling against modernity in regards to Time scarcity. How capitalism keeps pulling us back for more brutal productivity.

There’s a good amount of research and linking to history in how we got here. She argues for “being” over “doing” as well. I’ve shared some of her quotes on IG posts, and she even re-shared me. And she has perezoso medicine on the cover .🤩

Both of these authors are definitely people I’m interested to interview for the Decolonizing Time Summit I will host later this year.

Our next project is owl nesting boxes!

Your Sanctuary to Cultivate Wild Presence for Thriving with a Planet in Transition

Land Lineage

I was raised and bore children on the traditional, unceded, and stolen lands of the Coast and Central Valley Miwok (colonized as Petaluma, CA) and Nisenan (colonized as Sacramento and Fair Oaks, CA), past, present, and future. I also write, work, and live in the highland forest of the traditional, unceded and stolen lands of the Totonac, Nahua, and Mexicah, past, present, and future, in what is known as Coatepec, Veracruz, Mexico.

P.P.S. I do not live or consent to the colonial impositions regarding the construct of Time. I also practice honoring rhythms of work, play, and rest so that I can serve you with embodied presence and with loving care. This means I may take several days to respond to your requests and questions. (h/t Eva Glamaris)
