For retailers the holiday season can be the most rewarding or most stressful time of the year. Add in making it onto Oprah’s Favorite Things list and it becomes the year you get shot out of a canon.
.
In 1999 I was the second EA to Wally Arnold, CEO and Founder of Illuminations, the candle manufacturer. As Illuminations was growing he wanted to maintain his personal touch and voice in all communications. What an opportunity! I got schooled in his style and approach.
.
Coming off the Austin Powers summer blockbuster, I became known at HQ as Mini-Wally, his ghostwriter. Given my petite stature, I guess it was apropos.
.
That fall was monumental for the company. We got word that our Ritual Candles would be featured on Oprah’s big day, her most watched episode of the year. But let’s drop the pretense. It was a shit storm.
.
The giddy excitement of the day is akin to being the one that gets to open the front doors of WalMart on Black Friday. Within moments our servers crashed within hours we had sold out of much of the holiday product.
.
It was a lesson in humble vulnerability. A client hellbent on their gift purchase is not something to trifle with. That it was Oprah’s audience and it was the Art of Candlelight didn’t make much difference.
.
Wally’s genius approach was to completely acknowledge the situation with our clients. We bowed to Oprah’s spotlight and with sincerity asked how we could help make it right with our clients when we failed to meet their expectations. Every failed moment became an opportunity to transform their lives in a positive interaction.
.
For days I became a concierge for the toughest clients, the ones that were escalated all the way to the CEOs office. With bloodhound awareness I would seek out replacements through the network of stores, even digging through the warehouse to find the last item, and ship it in time for Christmas.
.
We transmuted the stress of materialistic desire for the peace that candlelight offers by owning our shortcomings. Staying authentic in our imperfections, acknowledging them with humility and gratitude might be good practice for this time, remembering why we celebrate Light in the darkest months of the year.

At our winter solstice wedding, at the time when it was darkest in the cycle, we lit a candle. And from that Light, we shared it with all our family and friends until everyone was Lit.

A friend called to say hello today. As she was catching me up on courses and life as a healer, she shared how she approached an in-class assignment. ☎️
The students were given an art assignment to draw and color about their Past, Present and Future. Well, let’s just say she isn’t inclined to do art. It rather made her anxious.
.
Instead, she has heard me ask, ‘How do you want feel?’ enough that she decided to use her words. She hasn’t done a formal Desire Map yet. But after this class it sounds like she’s well on her way to guiding her future from how she wants to feel as a starting point. And her group loved it enough to share with the professor.
.

Mendocino Avenue was a magical place for a Sag. Within a few blocks was an ivy-covered group of stunning light brick buildings – architecture with grand arches surrounded by massive oaks, a modest room with a velvet chair where I poured my heart out while solving puzzles in record time, and a Taco Bell.
.
Every week I would help put the college newspaper to bed, an all-nighter filled with intensity and a lot of sugar. Then I would see my therapist who was working me like the puzzle to realign my heart.
.
There were two men that had a profound shift in my consciousness during this time, my therapist and my journalism professor. I was 19 with two daughters under two when I went back to school to get my GED. This past couple weeks I learned they both moved into their next lives.
.
My therapist actually passed away last year, but the news didn’t make it to Nicaragua. My journalism professor is officially dunworkin as he Iiked to say.
.
As I explored the power that came with my sexuality, these two men – some of the good ones – taught me boundaries. Something my growing up lacked. These lessons showed me that I was worth more than the way I treated myself.
.
Learning journalism in the early 90s was a unique moment. Our newspaper was bleeding edge. We troubleshooted new software and systems that became the digital age. It was not without frustration. The bonds with my sisters and brothers of the press, the last of the sticky-fingered paste-ups, are still strong.
.
