I was recently discussing the Flow activator “Challenge/Skills Ratio” (a pre-condition that leads to Flow states) with a client as it pertains to growing our offerings and doing the thing of marketing.
The average human’s challenging activity that leads to Flow is about 4% greater than their skillset. Too challenging and the activity becomes too scary (beyond our nervous system capacity) and we hit resistance; not challenging enough and we get bored.
We need to be present and focused for Flow to emerge. Flow is what makes doing the thing fun and easy as our nervous systems is attuned to and in relationship with us and our activity.

Extinction Era
I am a firm believer in reducing cognitive load, speaking directly, and I do try to be clear in my communication. Whenever possible, I name the taboo, the elephant in the room.
I’m neuro-emergent, it comes with the terrain.
So, when Umair Haque posted another article about the Extinction Age a couple of days ago, I knew I wasn’t alone in what I’m witnessing and writing about, and why the work that I do is so vital.
While he does need to update his knowledge of anthropology (foregive him, he’s an economist by trade) in relation to Neanderthals (many of us carry Neanderthal DNA, humans didn’t kill them into extinction, we bred with them), the claim that climate chaos is due to anthropocentrism is spot on.
I’d also suggest that anthropocentrism is just another name for White Supremacy Culture and colonialism.
At the heart of his plea is a plea for Empathy for the dying planet and its inhabitants. Empathy so we will care enough to restore life back to the Earth.
And so, to tie this back around to a decolonial approach to Flow states that are restorative, I want to share another piece about the Challenge/Skills Ratio to creating conditions for Flow to emerge…
When we are faced with needing to do something MONUMENTAL because our life depends upon it, we are REQUIRED to get very clear and focused so we can do the thing.
This is why I am consistently placing cognitive bias on extinction events. Once you can move through the grief of what’s happening (thank you to Joanna Macy my mentor in grad school at CIIS), your body of work will show you why you’re made for this Time too. It’s an incredibly powerful lens with which to see the world now.
When we bring our presence and embodied relationship to see and relate with the world in all its pain and chaos, the conditions for Flow emerge. You can see clearly how your body of work aligns with THIS MOMENT, THIS TIME.
And the beauty is that in Flow, we are gifted that source energy of the neurochemistry (norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin, anandamide, and endorphins) that fuels our work coming into being for our people and the planet, rather than for unfettered capitalism and the systems of brutal productivity.
Lastly, I want to clarify that in speaking about this Time, I don’t believe in fate or coincidences. But I do believe in YOU!
