Great article about the food forest movement in public spaces. I was a huge supporter for using public dollars and public spaces in collaboration with volunteers when on Petaluma City Council. Easy tip for your #avocado trees. Avocados prefer more acidic soil. Adding coffee grounds as a mulch occasionally will help them thrive! #gardening #urbanfarming #urbangarden
The heart of our 8th & Bee outdoor space is our Hugelkultur garden bed and food forest. This raised bed design is built atop a spine of logs and twigs. It’s water conserving and provides a lot of room for growing. We grow about as much for our bees as for ourselves. For centuries, #indigo has long been prized for its scrumptious blue hue. There’s an exciting, growing movement in the North Bay fibershed to determine if growing indigo is viable. We’ve gotten into the action, planting 1500 three-stem #indigo starts at 8th & Bee (that’s 4500 indigo plants!) We’ll harvest it twice this year and dry the leaves in prep for a dye recipe.
Winter is such a great time of soil regeneration. Plus it makes mushrooms! 🙂
Mycorrhizae love. Mushrooms gracing the moist Winter soil around the 8th & Bee homestead.
