It’s Time to Embody Anti-Racism in Coaching

Over the past year I’ve grounded my practice of anti-racism into my coaching work. During this time I’ve observed how businesses performatively responded to the horrific violence against Black and Brown bodies of culture in 2020. Has it moved us forward to a more interconnected culture? Yes and…

As a coach, I’ve been building my business practices with embodying anti-racism in mind as I go. And so, as we dismantle and decolonize, we also need to reconstruct new systems of justice. You can read my Anti-Racism in Coaching Statement for my business that includes accountability to myself and my future employees.

I was going to just have it as link in the footer, but my business mentor, Kelly Diels saw it and said I need to share it.

Do you have a statement and practice anti-racism in the workplace? I’d love to see other examples of #CultureMaking. Let me know your thoughts.

Quick Question…

I’m running a new program with two spots opening in June. Initiated Leadership is focused on how to lead from a decolonized, initiated center – the Path to Aligned Emergence and Flow, to bring more co-creation into this world – so you can skip the crash that inevitably comes with passionate social and environmental impact work.

So if it’s something you’ve been thinking about, and you want to know more, will you let me know? (just hit reply and ask away).

Bayo Akomolafe

I was introduced to Bayo Akomolafe at the Tending the Roots Summit last month. So when Jenn Schindel recommended the Prentis Hempill podcast with Bayo, I was piqued. His postactivism is also getting at root of what I’m guiding clients to discover with Initiated Leadership, something completely different than traditional leading, but actual co-creation with the planet.

“Sacred activism is not activism+spirituality – not in an additive sense; it is what I call “post-activism”, or the kinds of commitments that invite us to ask new questions not only about what we are doing with the world but what the world is doing with us in the same gesture. In a posthuman relational world, the logic of the familiar is composted and the limitations involved in co-producing the ‘next’ are acknowledged. Rabbi Abraham Heschel notes that “to be spiritual is to be amazed.” It’s an important point to make – wonder corrodes fences and encourages transgressive boundary-crossing gestures. A sense of wonder infuses our ways of thinking about change, blowing it open to accommodate other modes of acting and becoming – making new capacities possible. This is what I think a sacred activism mode of engagement affords us: ‘new’ ways of meeting the universes that shake us from our firm tethering to victory”

Resting on and for the Earth

This article feeds the soul. The last few months I’ve been shifting away from stimulants (coffee and tea) and sweet foods as I learn to manage Type 1 Diabetes (I hope to live long, and to care for my pancreas without needing to rely on insulin). Rest has become a good friend.

“So many of us are worker bees, trapped in a capitalist 9-to-5 grind mindset that leaves us sleep-deprived, exhausted, and unable to imagine. Nap bishop Tricia Hersey, founder of the Nap Ministry, sees rest as a radical act of resistance and decolonization—particularly for Black people, whose rest has been and continues to be disrupted by white supremacy. Hersey speaks with brontë velez, a founding member of Lead to Life, about how to envision a new way of living that centers rest and liberation.”

The Fattest Girl in Pilates Class

My long-time friend Beth Winegarner wrote this much needed piece about her experience finding a pilates instructor. “A good pilates instructor should know how to work with a wide range of bodies, big and small, short and tall, injured and pain-free.”

Publishing Scholar-Activism from Helena Liu

I hosted Helena Liu’s workshop on Zoom this week. We’ve connected over Flow states and writing. It’s a great workshop on strategies for getting academic writings published, especially for scholar-activists. You can catch the recording here for a few weeks.

Land Lineage

I was raised and bore children on the traditional, unceded, and stolen lands of the Coast and Central Valley Miwok (colonized as Petaluma, CA) and Nisenan (colonized as Sacramento and Fair Oaks, CA), past, present, and future. I also write, work, and live in the highland forest of the traditional, unceded and stolen lands of the Totonac, Nahua, and Mexicah, past, present, and future, in what is known as Coatepec, Veracruz, Mexico.

P.P.S. I do not live or consent to the colonial impositions regarding the construct of Time. I also practice honoring rhythms of work, play, and rest so that I can serve you with embodied presence and with loving care. This means I may take several days to respond to your requests and questions. (h/t Eva Glamaris)
