“It feels like we are in the middle of a ketamine-fueled, middle-of-the-night, autocratic power grab that is rendering Congress irrelevant, that’s rendering policy irrelevant and that’s rendering the rule of law an afterthought, if not a joke, to those who are planning on staying in power indefinitely, without benefit of further elections.”

— Rachel Maddow

Beautiful Wildlings!

That Mars retrograde felt like bumping my head against a ceiling trying to get out of box for weeks. Grateful to have the energy moving again.

The horror of watching the “ketamine-fueled, middle-of-the-night, autocratic power grab” (thank you Rachel Maddow for that apt description) has me both riled up and given me that nauseous lack-of-sleep, adrenaline-fueled angst to doom scroll for more of the onslaught of new updates.

Checks and Imbalances

Meanwhile mi presidenta Claudia has filed lawsuits with the U.S., Google, and Apple over the Gulf of Mexico being unlawfully and unilaterally renamed by TFG and the tech giants complying ahead of actual law.

I’ve reduced my screen time significantly, choosing to catch headlines of what’s trending in Bluesky once a day, while maintaining social media ties with favorites on Threads. The titration of news has helped me stay connected to the riled up feeling more, rather than sinking into despair so I can remain dedicated to my work and writing.

There’s an app for making 5 Calls to Congress called 5 Calls. The pressure is working so well, GOP members of Congress are canceling Town Halls because the people are pissed. Let’s make sure they have nowhere to hide.

The Search for Truth

In true kicking myself after the fact fashion, I’m finally preparing my Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests before all possible records I need for my book are quietly buried under bureaucratic rubble. Not that I could have seen around the corner to know the level of this regime’s destruction.

The tangled web of U.S. imperialism, Latin American sovereignty, and anti-communist fervor runs straight through my family history, and I need to understand the depth of my grandparents’ involvement — how my grandfather helped supply arms to the Contras, translated Chile’s Social Security Act for Pinochet, and hosted Contra military officers before their training at the School of the Americas in the early 80s.

To even begin filing a FOIA, I have to:

  • Identify the right agencies (FBI, CIA, State Department, and a growing list of others)

  • Search public record archives for any documents that already exist

  • Scour FOIA request logs from others who may have already made similar requests (which are never searchable PDFs, because of course they aren’t)

  • OCR thousands of pages just to get a searchable document — Adobe Acrobat slowly grinding away as I untangle the threads

  • Carefully craft the requests for each agency, ensuring they include precise search terms, my relationship to my deceased grandparents, and a clear explanation of the intended use of the information

It reminds of the days when I was an editor for the college newspaper, OCR scanning documents for projects. Tedious work, my own kind of resistance while the world is burning, reminding me to keep breathing.

Repairing Harm

This work is an act of resistance. It’s ancestor work, but in reverse. Instead of uncovering forgotten stories of lineage and strength, I am excavating the ways in which my ancestors were complicit in harm, unearthing the mechanisms of empire through the small, calculated actions of individuals like my grandfather.

The narratives of imperialism are always grand, sweeping, and full of faceless institutions and political machinery, but real people made these decisions. Real people carried out the work. Real people — like my own kin — enabled the acts of violence that reshaped nations.

Reckoning with this history is about repair. It’s about refusing to let these stories remain sanitized, about looking at my own ancestors’ hand in this tangled inheritance and asking: What now? How does the lineage of revolution and repair meet in my own hands? How do I write a book that doesn’t just expose but also illuminates the pathways forward?

Revolutions involve dismantling the old and nurturing the embers of what was lost — the old ways of being, the movements, the futures that were stolen. Revisiting this history honors the people who resisted, who fought for their lands and their right to exist outside the grasp of empire.

By researching and spotlighting the greater network of Latin American resistance, the ways in which sovereignty is still being demanded and fought for, is to call in how those of us descended from empire’s agents have a responsibility to name the harm, break the cycle, and commit to something different.

To name the harms of the past is to refuse its erasure.

Stay wild, love fiercely. Your presence is golden.
