After a 14.5 hour drive from Oaxaca on Tuesday, we arrived at the new house and unpacked the truck by about 1am Wednesday. Unloading is way faster than loading. Our mover/drivers were amazing!
The bed was a bit of a puzzle to get up the semi spiral staircase. I eventually got 4 men to listen to my plan after proving that the bed wasn’t square, but 10 centimeters shorter on one side. Getting one man to listen to an AFAB in MesoAmerica can be quite a feat. They eventually saw the option and we got it upstairs and were asleep by 3:30am. #machismoisaliveandwell
In the morning we took the dogs out and I can’t explain the joy they showed hopping around on the grass. There’s so much flat space for them to run around now.
We’ve been learning the quirks of the house. We can’t use 3 appliances at the same time. We can heat the water kettle and have the heater running, but not the airy fryer or the washing machine too. And when we use an appliance, the lights in the kitchen dim. So, the choices are: be warm, have light, or eat.
But not all at once. 😅
And after hours of trying, we were unable to install simple bidet wands on the toilets (IYKYK). We had to get a plumber with a special tool to try and hook it up. The tanks aren’t flat underneath where the water hose attaches, so a normal hand-tighten install became very complex. And even with the special tool they just wouldn’t fit correctly. So I’ve ordered a part from the US to make it work, fingers crossed.
But we did get a solid toilet seat installed in one. All the existing toilet seats are split at the front, which is so gross for anyone with thighs.
We searched high and low for a pole fastener for the satellite internet, but that too couldn’t be found locally. So that part is also en route from the US. Poco a poco.
For the upstairs router, I found wifi extenders, but they supposedly only work on the same electrical circuit, so I haven’t been able to get wifi in my downstairs office space yet. Getting wifi to cross through 18-inch adobe walls is impossible.
So we’ve been taking turns to make Zoom calls by the router upstairs. But the desk is on the landing and voices carry better than wifi.
This morning we discovered the downstairs bedroom does receive the wifi from upstairs for calls, so that will likely be where my very loud partner will work. For the morning Google Meet I didn’t hear anything!
Between my Astro/HD reading yesterday and this morning it feels like the first time I’ve been in Flow for weeks…
The space needs my mesa altar, art and textiles and then it will feel more complete. But even still it feels so homey. And Kuali, our Xoloitzcuintli pup (show-low-itz-QUEENT-ly), has really chilled out here. She even found a morning sun spot.
