Disaster Justice, Thriving in Transition 🐉 August 5th, 2021 Dragon Letter

Welcome to Dragon Letters, No. 6

Cancer Moon Edition

August 5th, 2021

Hola my dear ,

In this Dragon Letter we’re diving a bit deeper into what it means to live with a planet in transition and thriving within chaos. We’ll continue to dismantle white supremacist ideas of the wild. You know, all the fun stuff!

But for real… how are we doing? How can we expand our capacity for this Time? Weave in community care in all your do. Everyone is going through something. Be kind, and love fiercely.

We can chose our discomfort now and avoid a worsening of our future through Decolonizing now.

I’m grateful to be alive in this Time. We have all the tools we need to thrive in transition as long as we are Decolonizing.

Please reply and let me know your favorite things from this Dragon Letter and your reflections.

(The huge favorite of my last email was my upcoming Decolonizing Time workshop. Over 100 people have already registered. If you are one of them, thank you for affirming this work! You’ll find those and many other great resources if you search your inbox and put me in your safe list. Star✨ me, add to Primary Inbox etc.)

Disaster Justice

Book Recommendation

Disasterologist (it’s a thing) Samantha Montano has written about this Time through intersections of climate activism and disaster preparedness, while centering justice.

This topic resonates deeply. When Katrina happened I became Certified Emergency Response Team trained and created evacuation plans and systems with my neighbors. I got a ham radio license and then I ran for city council, because climate chaos preparation was not happening at the city or regional level to the degree it needed to be.

Some of my biggest cognitive load comes from being unprepared. Go-bags, extra food, water, and medicine. These are the things that make me feel resourced and ready. The things that help calm my nervous system.

Preparing for climate chaos is why we chose to live where we are, and why we still feel secure in our location after going through multi-year shelter-in-place living. Part of that work is also about Decolonizing so we can co-create a world where all can thrive.

Know your neighbors. They are usually the ones that you’re going to go through a disaster with. Have a plan. And ask questions about where your disaster dollars are being spent locally, regionally, and at the State and Federal levels.

At the moment essential disaster resources in Minnesota are being used against Indigenous people protecting the water source of millions of people in the US. That’s not right. Visit Stop Line 3 to find out how you can take a stand.

Alexis Nicole (aka Black Forager)

Alexis Nikole Nelson, the very popular Black Forager on TikTok made a great video in response to someone commenting about her foraging being harmful after it was highlighted in the New York times article: How Black Foragers Find Freedom in the Natural World.

The assumption that wild places are untouched and that wild places need protection from humans is a false narrative that I found quite problematic when working on environmental justice issues in Northern California.

Problematic because, as Alexis explains, the protections were meant to remove BIPOC from the land and resources so white people could have a place to explore and rest.

Sadly, raging wildfires are the price that all Californians are now paying for “land protection” and lavish lifestyles combined with unchecked corporate ecocide that funds their lifestyles. An elsewhere in the world the injustice of these actions is creating climate fuckery with devastating effect.

Reconnecting with Time/Space/Place, decolonizing. This is how we heal the rift.

Your Sanctuary to Cultivate Wild Presence for Thriving with a Planet in Transition

Land Lineage

I was raised and bore children on the traditional, unceded, and stolen lands of the Coast and Central Valley Miwok (colonized as Petaluma, CA) and Nisenan (colonized as Sacramento and Fair Oaks, CA), past, present, and future. I also write, work, and live in the highland forest of the traditional, unceded and stolen lands of the Totonac, Nahua, and Mexicah, past, present, and future, in what is known as Coatepec, Veracruz, Mexico.

P.P.S. I do not live or consent to the colonial impositions regarding the construct of Time. I also practice honoring rhythms of work, play, and rest so that I can serve you with embodied presence and with loving care. This means I may take several days to respond to your requests and questions. (h/t Eva Glamaris)
